It’s unfortunate, but true. You can’t keep ‘em all. Just like spring cleaning your house, radio stations occasionally have to clean out the library – there’s just not enough time in the day to play everything. That’s why you’ll hear a song on 99X for a while…then ‘poof’, it’s gone. For whatever reason, it just didn’t make the cut. Here are a couple of those songs. Songs that struck a chord for a time, but were (in the words of Linkin Park) lost in the echo.

Caroline’s Spine – Sullivan

Caroline’s Spine was created by lead singer/primary songwriter Jimmy Newquist in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1993. The band released two national albums (Monsoon and Attention Please) on Hollywood Records and made appearances on two motion picture soundtracks (An American Werewolf In Paris and Varsity Blues). They also toured around the world, opening for bands like Kiss and Aerosmith. C-Spine became a Shreveport favorite, playing many times at The Havana (now Chicago’s).

Cool For August – Don’t Want To Be Here

Cool for August was a rock band consisting of notable Canadian singer-songwriter Shad Hills on guitar, Andrew Shives on bass, Gordan Vaughn on vocals, Trevor Kustiak on guitar, and Shane Hills on drums. The band recorded one album, Grand World, for Warner Brothers in 1997. Demos for a second album were recorded, but the album never surfaced, and the band broke up in 2001.

Motorgrater – Suffocate

Motograter are best known as the launching pad for Ian Moody, the frontman of Five Finger Death Punch. Secondly for their homemade instrument, the “motograter”, designed with industrial cable and guitar pieces that creates a very deep bass sound. The band is also known for painting themselves in a tribal style body paint for live concerts. Formed in 1995, with Bruce “Grater” Butler playing the Motograter, Joey “Smur” Krzywonski on percussion, Chris “Crispy” Binns on drums, and Zak “The Waz” Ward on vocals, Moody joined in 2002, just in time for the release of the band’s first major label release, Motograter. A second album never came, and the band split in 2005. Several false starts with different lineups have occured since, but nothing of note has resulted.

Bloodhound Gang – Firewater Burn

Hailing from Collegeville, Pennsylvania, The Bloodhound Gang began as a rap group but gradually changed its genre throughout the years, finally settling in as an off-beat, humorous , rock band.
Formed by Jimmy Pop an Daddy Long Legs in the early ’90s, the band continues to record and tour, and have been threatening to release a new album for the last 2 or 3 years.

Sepultura – Ratamahatta

Sepultura (Portuguese for “grave”)is a Brazilian metal band from Belo Horizonte, founded in 1984 by brothers Max and Igor Cavalera. Sepultura became a major force in the death metal, thrash metal and groove metal genres during the late 1980s and early 1990s,eventually releasing 12 studio albums, the latest being Kairos in 2011.

Should 99X still be playing these songs? Or maybe you think they should never have been played at all. Do you have any favorite ’99X Flashbacks’? Let us know, maybe we’ll bring them back from the dead…
