Telltale’s ‘The Wolf Among Us: Episode 1′ Blows the House Down [REVIEW]

Wolf Among Us review

Telltale Games have hit another home run. Last year, they released the amazing, award winning The Walking Dead game. This time around, they have released the amazingly well-written fairy tale noir The Wolf Among Us.

For the uninitiated, The Wolf Among Us game is based on another big time comic series — Fables, which follows the story of fairy tale characters living as people in New York City. The game itself is a prequel to the first episode of the comic. If you’ve never read the comics, you can catch up with the story pretty quickly.

In the game, you play as Sheriff Bigby Wolf (AKA the Big Bad Wolf), who is investigating the murder of another fairy tale character, Faith (from the Brothers Grimm Tale, Allerleirauh).

Not to give away any major plot points, but during Bigby’s murder investigation you run into many fable legends including the Woodsman, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, Snow White, Ichabod Crane, and many more.

For those in fear that this is going to be some sort of childish game, know you’d be sadly mistaken. This game is a dark as it gets: Murder, rape, prostitution, drugs, alcoholism, suicide and all sorts of grim goodies lie around each dirty corner in this very adult-oriented adventure.

The first episode of this five-part game, subtitled ‘Faith,’ is around two hours of pure joy. Every decision you make, leaves an imprint on how the game progresses later on.

You can decide to be nice to a suspect or to pummel the hell of of him. You can be kind to a damsel in distress or shatter her psyche. Every action, every word spoken has positive and negative consequences.

These decisions provide depth, excellent chaos, and a high-replay quality to the game; you want to go back time and time again to see how difference choices cause different outcomes.

Every moment of this episode’s investigation is filled with intriguing characters, mysterious settings and fantastic writing. It’s like being immersed in your favorite modernized fable with you in the driver’s seat of how the story progresses and ultimately ends — which is a fantastic feeling.

Again, I don’t want to ruin any of the surprises in this phenomenal story, but I will say that this is a must-own game and, as far as I’m concerned, already a frontrunner for 2014’s game of the year. It will suck you in and spit you out in the best way possible. I’d give it a solid 9.5/10.

You can score yourself the first episode of The Wolf Among Us from Telltale Games’ website or via the online game stores on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3.
