What Will Go Where The New Orleans Monuments Were?

I have been wondering what would become of the spaces and places that were once home to Civil War monuments in the city of New Orleans. There were four monuments in particular that the city felt were no longer appropriate for public land. The last of those monuments, the iconic statue of Robert E. Lee is slated for removal this morning.

So, what’s going into those empty spaces?

The City of New Orleans announced yesterday that a water feature and an American flag would fill the void. The water feature will be put in place where the soon to be removed statue of Lee was located. An American flag will be placed at the former location of the Jefferson Davis statue.

According to reporter Manuel Torres in a piece that was penned for what will replace the statue of General P.G.T. Beauregard has not been decided. The fourth space of a former monument, the Battle of Liberty Place obelisk, will remain empty.

New Orleans officials are speculating that these changes and additions will be completed in time for the 2018 celebration of the tricentennial of the city. I guess that will be a celebration of “most” of the history of the city. I say that because the almighty mayor of New Orleans Mitch Landrieu seems to think the city’s history should be edited instead of understood so it won’t be repeated.
