Today’s the one day of the year that it’s good to be in a pickle. Or to get pickled.
It’s National Pickle Day–the one day of the year to celebrate this delectable snack that’s been around for 4,000 years. According to National Day Calendar, cucumbers were brought from India to the Tigris Valley where they were pickled. In Egypt, Cleopatra was said to have relished pickles (pun intended) and even credited them with giving her her legendary beauty. Across the Mediterranean in Rome, Julius Caesar fed pickles to his troops because he believed it gave them “physical and spiritual strength.”
Today, there are myriad varieties of pickles available in stores, and even more in home kitchens across the country. The 5 most popular pickles are:
- Dill pickle–the most popular and best for burgers and Chick-Fil-A sandwiches.
- Bread and Butter Pickle–a sweet pickle also perfect for sandwiches and burgers.
- Kosher dill pickle–if you like garlic, this one’s for you.
- Gherkin–this actually is just a small pickle variety which can be either dill or sweet.
- Sour pickle–this variety of pickle is left in pickling brine much longer than other pickles and the longer in the brine, the more sour the pickle.
