Some People in South Korea Find the Best Way to Beat the Heat is . . . Dog Soup?

klocean via flickr

At this point, we’d really like to think the whole “people in Korea eat dogs” stereotype is tired and worn out. So we’d LOVE to retire it for good.

But we can’t. Because dammit, they just won’t stop eating dogs.

Right now, much of South Korea is going through a major heat wave. And one of the ways that some people there cope with the heat is . . . DOG SOUP.

The soup is called bo-shin-tang, and it’s made of dog meat boiled in a broth, with vegetables and extreme spices. Some South Koreans believe it helps their bodies stay regulated and avoid overheating.

In parts of South Korea, dogs are bred for food. Right now, dog meat prices are cheaper than chicken prices, so dog soup is more popular than usual.
