Corruption is the abuse of power by a public official for private gain or any organized, interdependent system in which part of the system is either not performing duties it was originally intended to, or performing them in an improper way, to the detriment of the system’s original purpose. The abuse of public offices for private gain is paradigmatic of corruption. Corrupt judicial systems not only violate the basic right to equality before the law but deny procedural rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution.

While corruption may facilitate criminal enterprise such as drug trafficking, money laundering, and mail fraud.; it is not restricted to these activities. In this country, corruption is so common that it is expected when ordinary businesses or citizens interact with government officials. The end-point of political corruption is a kleptocracy, literally “rule by thieves”.

Today, I was witness to judicial corruption in action, and it wasn’t pretty. A D.A. that sells out a ‘client’ for some political points to be used later. A judge who, according to an officer of the court, has been known to rule in favor of the highest bidder. And a carnival sideshow clown masquerading as an attorney – known less for his talent in the courtroom than from his political clout. On trial, one of the most evil pieces of **** I’ve ever seen. A known drug dealer and user; prone to physical and mental violence to women and others weaker than him; a guy who laughs at the law in general because Daddy always buys him out of his problems. And apparently, Daddy opened up the checkbook again, because 80% of the “trial” consisted of Moe, Larry, and Curly “nyuk, nyuk, nyuking” it up at the bench…and then Judge Moe dismissing the charges. This waste of taxpayer dollars and laughable excuse of a legal system made me physically ill. If any of the three stooges involved – and you know who you are, and shame on you for the mockery you made of our justice system – had even a modicum of decency or integrity, they would resign and crawl off to their respective holes. But they won’t – there’s too much money at stake. So we’re stuck with them and their ilk, and the travesty of justice they perpetuate. I’ve traveled all over the country, and I can’t count the number of times I’ve had to defend Louisiana and the reputation it has due to history and innumerable “reality” shows…but I’ve never been embarrassed to say I live here. Until today.
