ABC Cancels ‘The Muppets’ After Just One Baffling Season
Despite an attempt to turn things around with a new showrunner in the middle of the first season, The Muppets hasn’t really caught on with audiences the way ABC had hoped. What once seemed like a surefire hit (it’s the Muppets!) turned into a bizarre experiment (it’s a meta-fake-documentary series!) before ultimately becoming an interesting failure (shrug emoji), at best. The short version: ABC has cancelled The Muppets after just one season.
‘Space Jam’ Director Says the LeBron James Sequel Is ‘Doomed’
We’ve long been promised / threatened a sequel to Space Jam, and Warner Bros. is determined to follow through on that plan, recently tapping Furious 6 director Justin Lin to helm the project. But the director of the original film doesn’t think any of this is a good idea; in fact, he thinks WB should go ahead and pump the brakes on Space Jam 2 before it even takes off.
Rumor: ‘Star Wars: Episode 8’ Features a Tom Hardy Cameo
Could Tom Hardy be following in the Stormtrooper footsteps of Daniel Craig? According to the latest rumor regarding Star Wars: Episode VIII, it would appear that the simple answer is yes. And while it’s easy to believe this report based on similarly fun cameos in The Force Awakens, now would be a good time to remind you of the 40 (yes, 40) rumors about that film that turned out to be totally wrong. As always, approach this report with a bit of skepticism, but it may very well be true.
There’s a ‘Slender Man’ Movie in the Works, Obviously
Honestly, it’s surprising it took this long for a studio to begin developing a horror movie based on Slender Man, the creepy meme that took on a prolific life of its own, inspiring countless photoshopped images, fan art, fan fiction and eventually a video game and a documentary. As rumored yesterday and confirmed today, Screen Gems is the studio that will finally put Slender Man on the big screen, though given how quickly things tend to age in internet years, you have to wonder if this horror movie will still feel relevant by the time it hits theaters.
Marvel Fans Still Want That Black Widow Solo Movie, According to New Poll
Of the original Avengers cast, only Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow haven’t starred in their own solo movies. While audiences only really warmed up to Hawkeye thanks to his arc in Age of Ultron, fans have been enamored with Black Widow since she made her debut in the otherwise-underwhelming Iron Man 2. There’s been talk off and on over the last few years about a Black Widow solo movie, and just in case the people in suits over at Marvel are wondering: yes, audiences still very much want to see it.
Black Panther and Bucky Brawl in New ‘Captain America: Civil War’ Clip
Would you like to watch 38 seconds of Black Panther brawling with Bucky Barnes on a rooftop in Captain America: Civil War? Of course you would. And thanks to the video above, you can. Marvel has released a new clip from their upcoming film, in which the two heroes engage in a riveting fight, and Chadwick Boseman shows off some seriously slick moves.
‘Suicide Squad’ Star Margot Robbie Defends Harley Quinn’s Costume
Not only did Harley Quinn become an instant fan favorite following her debut on Batman: The Animated Series, but she quickly became an iconic villain, and it wasn’t long before she transitioned to the pages of DC Comics. While most fans agree that Margot Robbie is the perfect choice for the role in Suicide Squad, there’s been much less agreement over her wardrobe — or lack thereof — in David Ayer’s upcoming film. Robbie herself has officially chimed in, offering her thoughts on Harley’s controversial fashion choices.
‘Preacher’ Star Dominic Cooper on the Absurd New AMC Series and Becoming a Comic Book Fan
Dominic Cooper is following up his role as the younger Howard Stark in Marvel’s Agent Carter with two more franchise adaptations this summer. In addition to appearing on the big screen in Duncan Jones’ Warcraft, Cooper stars in Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Preacher, the new AMC series based on Garth Ennis’ beloved graphic novels. Debuting on May 1, the first episode impressively captures the darkly comedic and devious tone of the comics, leaving us eager to see more. We had a chance to speak with Cooper following the premiere of Preacher at SXSW, where he discussed his part in the risky adaptation and teased some of the crazy stuff we'll see in the episodes and (hopefully) seasons ahead.
‘Doctor Strange’ Star Tilda Swinton Addresses ‘White-Washing’ Controversy
Doctor Strange is just one of a few projects that’s inspired a bit of controversy in recent weeks. Along with the first photo of Scarlett Johansson in the live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell (and subsequent rumors of some questionable VFX tests) and the predominantly white cast of Marvel’s Iron Fist series, Doctor Strange has similarly drawn ire for its casting of Tilda Swinton in the role of the Ancient One, a character that was originally Asian in the comic books. While those other controversies have yet to really be addressed, Queen Tilda herself is speaking on behalf of Doctor Strange. And when Queen Tilda speaks, we must listen — even if she doesn’t really have any answers to give.
Warner Bros. Sets 2017 Release Dates for Stephen King’s ‘It’ and ‘CHiPs’
Warner Bros. has announced release dates for two of their upcoming adaptations / reboots, adding both films — along with an untitled mystery project — to their 2017 slate. First up is CHiPs, Dax Shepard’s new action-comedy based on the classic ’80s TV series, starring Shepard and Michael Peña in the leading roles. Next is It, the long-developing and slightly-delayed adaptation of Stephen King’s beloved horror novel, which became the subject of some minor controversy following director Cary Fukunaga’s departure.
‘Blade Runner 2’ Adds ‘Knock Knock’ Star Ana de Armas
Knock Knock is a pretty terrible movie that not even Keanu Reeves could redeem — though it wasn’t entirely bad. One of the (very) few good things about Eli Roth’s 2015 thriller is Ana de Armas, the charming Cuban actress who made the film somewhat watchable. Luckily, her next project probably won’t need any help in that department, but it’s definitely a huge step up from her most recent roles.
Dwayne Johnson Will Officially Star in ‘Jumanji,’ Says He’s ‘Edging Up’ the Script
Following reports that he was in talks to join the Jumanji remake, Dwayne Johnson has made the news Instagram-official (which is his version of making a relationship "Facebook official"). In addition to boarding the remake, Johnson reveals that he's "edging up" the script with his team, and just in case his involvement wasn't enough to soothe your fears, rest assured that The Rock has no intention of messing this one up.
