The Scripps National Spelling Bee kicks off today. Youngsters from across the country will show off their spelling skills. Calvin Alexander Jr. of Caddo Middle Magnet is a 12 year old and is the local representative in the big contest.

Preliminary rounds continue today as we gear up for tomorrow's final in the nation's largest and longest-running educational promotion. Round 3 begins at 12:15 and is being broadcast on EPSN3

In terms of spelling, Google just published an article including the most misspelled words in each state. In Louisiana, our word is "giraffe".

You would think we'd find some of our strange Louisiana words like Tangipahoa or Natchitoches, but giraffe tops the list this year. I think that's probably because of the many weeks of waiting for the momma giraffe to have her baby earlier this year.

In Texas, the word is maintenance, while Arkansas residents need help with Chihuahua. Mississippi need help with a pretty simple word, nanny.

Business Insider reports several states, Alabama, Maine and Washington have trouble with Pneumonia while "beautiful" tops the list in California, Kentucky, Minnesota, Ohio, and New York.

Good luck to all the youngsters participating in the spelling bee. I'm just thankful for spellcheck.
