U.S. Supreme Court Rules Louisiana Monks Can Continue to Sell Caskets

Monks in the state of Louisiana can continue to sell their handmade coffins across the state, thanks to a recent ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Members of the Louisiana State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors attempted to make it mandatory for anyone purchasing a casket in the state of Louisiana to be forced to do so from a state recognized funeral planning facility and not from Benedictine monks.

However, an attorney for St. Joseph Abbey in Covington announced today that the U.S. Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal by the state and has moved that the monks, and anyone else for that matter, are well within their rights to build and sell caskets without restrictions from the government.

A district judge and the 5th U.S. Circuit of Appeals found that there is no reason why only state regulated funeral homes should be permitted to sell caskets in the state of Louisiana, and that “economic protectionism,” as stated by the attorney’s for the Louisiana board as being the reason for requesting a Supreme Court hearing, is not a legitimate concern.

Therefore, the monks of St. Joseph Abbey are back in business – continuing to sell high quality wooden coffins to those people concerned about taking a dirt nap in style.
