Truckers Might Have To Slow Down On Louisiana Highways

Anyone that drives regularly between Shreveport and Bossier City knows how insane traffic is as you approach the Red River.  You have the downtown traffic trying to enter I-20 on those ridiculously short entrance ramps.  Then you have cars trying to merge onto or exit off of I-49.  The road design seems like it came from the mind of a mad scientist.

Then there are the drivers themselves compounding the problem.   We've all had that experience where an 18-wheeler is trying to squeeze by you in the left lane on one of those narrow bridges on the Bossier side of I-20.  Not to mention all the speed demons who think they're drafting in a NASCAR race; they're tailgating the car in front of them at 85 mph.  Are they really that much in a hurry?

Well, if one state legislator has his way, the big long haul truckers will have to slow down in Louisiana.  Representative Steve Carter from Baton Rouge has filed legislation that would require 18-wheelers to drive 10 miles per hour under the posted speed limit. Recently speed limits were reduced for large trucks on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge, and Carter says that accidents have decreased.

Don't know that such a law would have much effect in the SBC, though.  People pretty much seem to ignore speed limit signs and with the manpower shortages that area police departments are experiencing, who's going to enforce it?
