On Thursday (July 18), the city of Detroit filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection, with more than $18 billion in debt. One of its most famous native sons, rocker Ted Nugent, has taken aim at those whom he feels is responsible for the city's long-standing financial woes.

"Liberal Democrats took hold of the greatest, most productive city on earth and turned it into a bloodsucker excuse-making hell," he told TMZ. "Liberals seem to think that what Mugabe did to destroy the breadbasket of Africa in Zimbabwe is somehow a desirable model."

Robert Mugabe has been President of Zimbabwe since 1987. His time in command has seen the economic collapse of the country and he has been accused of conducting a reign of terror, including rape and murder, against his political foes. "If allowed to continue," Nugent predicted, "our President will do the same to the whole country. Heartbreaking and tragic."

Detroit, which has not had a Republican mayor since 1962, became the largest U.S. city to file for bankruptcy. On Friday, an Ingham County Circuit Court judge ruled that the bankruptcy was in violation of Michigan's Constitution, which prevents the cutting of the pension benefits of public employees.
