November 30, 2012 At some point in time, most of us have shot video at a concert - on our cellphones, the video setting on our digital cameras, and sometimes (if we can sneak it past security) on an actual video camera. Most of the time the result is crap, with someone yelling into the mic, waving their hand in front of the camera, or knocking you around. But sometimes, you actually get good stuff.
We've all seen them. The homeless (or ALLEGED homeless) guy at the intersection with his cardboard sign, asking for your cash. I admit, I'm a sucker for "Vietnam Vet...Homeless...Need $$ to get home to see my dying mother" (Although I am baffled at how a 35-year-old guy...toothless or not...could be a Vietnam vet. But, that's a story for another day).
Being in the school band just got a whole lot cooler for some of the kids in the Los Angeles area: Eddie Van Halen has teamed up with the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation to donate 75 guitars from his personal collection to schools that don’t have enough funding to pay for instruments. For Van Halen, it was a simple case of giving back — as he put it simply, “Music education and families are dealing with the economic times, and I wanted to help them.”
We recently reported that Scott Weiland was going to rejoin Velvet Revolver, but only for a short lived one night stand. Now VR guitarist Dave Kushner has offered up more details on the reunion.
Pearl Jam celebrated a special anniversary in September when they rolled into Alpine Valley’s Music Theater in Wisconsin for their PJ20 festival, and now they have something special planned for needy children in the area. The band has pledged to donate $50,000 to Blessings in a Backpack, an organization that provides weekend meals for students who qualify for the federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program.
Linkin Park have taken an active philanthropic role since the Japan earthquake and tsunami disaster struck earlier this year. The band quickly began to raise money for ‘Save the Children‘ — an international charily focused on children’s rights, providing relief and supporting children in developing countries.
Linkin Park often encourages its audience to make charitable contributions, acknowledges singer Chester Bennington.
So when they put out the call to raise money for tsunami relief in Japan, Bennington and his band mates decided to give their fans some extra incentive. And it’s a good one for both sides. Raise $500 by Aug. 24 for the band’s Music for Relief charity, and you and a guest can attend Linkin Park’s “secret” show in Los Angeles on Aug. 31.
Through the years, Motley Crue has spent a lot of time rocking Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, Calif., with the legendary Whisky A Go-Go club among its many haunts.
So if any band deserves to be honored at the 2011 Sunset Strip Music Festival, it’s the Crue. The tribute, set for Aug. 18, is going to involve real whiskey: special-edition bottles of Jack Daniel’s, with proceeds going to a charity that’s very dear to one Crue member.
