[UPDATE] Two people have been arrested following this morning's home invasion attempt -- the homeowner and a female who was at the home at the time.

Police say 21-year-old Austin Holstead is charged with one count of cruelty to a juvenile and one count of illegal use of a weapon with illegal narcotics present. And 23-year-old Kimberly Dowden is charged with cruelty to a juvenile.

Detectives continue trying to identify the second man who broke into the home. A vehicle believed to have been used in the crime has been impounded.

[ORIGINAL STORY]  One man is dead and another on the run following an attempted home invasion early this morning in east Shreveport.

Just before 1 a.m., patrol officers were called to a home in the 800 block of Kimbrough Street, near Shreveport-Barksdale Highway, to a reported shooting. They discovered that one alleged suspect had been fatally shot inside the home, possibly at the hands of the homeowner.

Preliminary evidence suggests two masked men, at least one of whom was armed with a semi-automatic rifle, entered the home. Detectives believe the homeowner armed himself and shot one of the suspects. The second reportedly fled on foot. It's unknown if he was wounded.

Evidence seized during a search of the residence suggests illegal narcotics may have been a motivating factor in the crime. Minor children were inside at the time of the shooting. They were not hurt, but child welfare has been notified.

Investigators are working to identify and catch the second suspect. Anyone with information that can help is asked to call Shreveport-Caddo Crime Stoppers at 318-673-7373.
