State Senator Greg Tarver of Shreveport joined us on KEEL this morning and he says Louisiana is "broke" and we must do something now. Tarver says we've been kicking the can down the road for far too long.

Governor John Bel Edwards says we will have to raise significant revenues to address our state's 980 million dollar deficit this fiscal year which ends on June 30th. He says we are $2 billion in the hole for next fiscal year.

The governor is proposing higher income taxes, a higher cigarette tax, increased corporate taxes and a one penny increase in the sales tax.

Lawmakers gather in special session beginning this Sunday.
