Nikki Sixx may have said goodbye to Mötley Crüe, but he hasn’t let go of the music.

Currently making the promotional rounds with his band Sixx:A.M. for their new album Prayers for the Damned Vol. 1, Sixx took a surprising detour into his multiplatinum past during a visit to the French radio show La Bande Originale de Nagui. The group’s acoustic set featured reworked versions of the new songs “Rise” and “Prayers for the Damned” as well as a different take on the Crüe song “Live Wire,” originally recorded for their 1981 debut album Too Fast for Love.

The “Live Wire” performance, which you can listen to below, comes as even more of a surprise for fans who took Sixx at his word when he publicly vowed never to perform another Mötley Crüe song after the band went its separate ways. “Why would I do another version of Mötley Crüe? Sixx: A.M. is completely different musically, spiritually, emotionally, visually … and that gives me pride,” he insisted last year. “The people who are coming to see us, are coming to see Sixx: A.M. We don’t play Mötley Crüe music and we never will play Mötley Crüe music. The day Mötley Crüe plays its last show, I will never play another Mötley Crüe song again … even if it’s one I wrote.”

Of course, it’s a songwriter’s prerogative to change his mind about his own songs, and Sixx has evidently had an evolution of thought since making that promise. As he pointed out to a Twitter follower who questioned the decision, there’s a difference between performing the odd older cut and trying to cash in on one’s past. “The band had a great idea to do a haunting version just for French Radio,” he wrote. “We are not living off of it.”

Check out Sixx:A.M.’s version of “Live Wire” below. You can also stream their complete La Bande Originale de Nagui appearance.
