A woman who was a passenger in a vehicle driven by a burglary suspect is dead, and the suspect is hospitalized after crashing his truck.

It started with a call to Shreveport patrol officers from a man who witnessed his vehicle being burglarized while it was parked at Sam's Town Casino. The man watched the suspect steal and load items into a truck. The suspect spotted the man, and allegedly sped away from the scene.

The victim reportedly followed the fleeing suspect while alerting responsing officers of the suspect's vehicle description and the direction he was traveling. The suspect sped southbound onto I-49 from I-20, allegedly pointing a gun stolen from the victim's car at the victim as he drove away.

It's believed the suspect, 21-year-old Christian Smith of Shreveport, attempted to negotiate an exit from the interstate at Hollywood Avenue and lost control of the truck, which crashed and burst into flames. Smith managed to escape the vehicle after the crash, but his female passenger died at the scene. Her name isn't being released pending notification of family.

Smith was taken to University Health, where he underwent surgery for his injuries. He is expected to survive, and will face a charge of aggravated burglary once he's released. Additional charges could be levied against him as the investigation continues.
