Shreveport police detectives are investigating what appears to be a tragic accident that left a 1-year-old girl dead.

Patrol officers were called to a medical emergency at the Cooper Road Plaza apartments in the 2900 block of Peach Street. When they arrived, they found out a 1-year-old girl had been pronounced dead.

Violent crimes detectives and crime scene investigators launched an investigation. Preliminary information suggests the child was inside an apartment shared by two siblings and the mother.

The mother was apparently asleep in a separate room inside the apartment, when she woke to find the child pinned beneath a dresser that had tipped over, landing on top of the toddler. The little girl was unable to free herself, and died as a result.

Authorities are working to confirm the chain of events leading up to the tragedy. No charged have been filed so far.
