New Texas Law Allows Open Carry Of Swords And Machetes

Texas, it’s like a whole other country. Depending on your view of the Lone Star State that’s either a positive statement about how unique Texas is or it’s one of those slogans that opens the state up for criticism. My guess is that a new law that will go into effect on September first with have a lot of people shaking their heads. My head will not be included in the “what the heck were they thinking” shaking.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott actually signed the legislation that would allow residents to openly carry blades longer than 5.5 inches in public last month. There are restrictions. You can’t bring your sword, machete, or Bowie knife to school to church to an amusement park or to a prison. I know, it’s like why bother huh?

Here’s why I don’t mind the new open carry statute. It’s really hard to hide a sword or a machete. Since most of these weapons would be out in the open you can readily size up a situation. With a handgun, you don’t know who is packing heat but a guy with a sword in his pants will at least walk funny.

I would think that the mere presence of a large blade would diffuse more situations than it would incite situations. Chances are you’re not going to get physical over a minor altercation when the other guy has a Bowie knife.

I only see this law as being a big deal when someone walks into a restaurant and starts going psycho because they put pickles on his burger when specifically asked for them to be left off. Then we’re back to the whole gun control debate.

By the way, the United States Constitution addressed that issue quite nicely in Amendment Number 2. You can read it for yourself.

I don’t carry a weapon. I don’t have a gun and I don’t have a sword. I don’t mind you having either or both of those items if you’ll use them responsibly. But then again it’s not the responsible person that creates the need for the debate, is it?
