What’s the Name of the Song in the ‘Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’ Trailer?

Konami unveiled a new trailer for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain at E3 2014. Besides the bloody battlefield imagery, “Nuclear,” the song that accompanies the powerful video, has struck a chord with fans.

The song, written by British singer and composer Mike Oldfield, is from his 2014 album “Man on the Rocks.” You may recognize the name; Oldfield composed “Tubular Bells,” a song also known as the theme song from “The Exorcist.”

Listening to the song, it’s easy to see why Hideo Kojima, the mastermind behind the Metal Gear Solid universe, chose it: “Nuclear” parallels a key theme of the game — namely, loss:

Standing on the edge of the crater/Like the prophets once said /And the ashes are all cold now/No more bullets and the embers are dead/Whispers in the air tell the tales/Of the brothers gone/Desolation, devastation/What a miss we made, when it all went wrong

In the world of “Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain,” that loss relates to a group of military renegades called Militaires Sans Frontières (Soldiers Without Borders, or Military Without Frontiers). Led by protagonist Big Boss/Snake, the group attempts to carve out a niche as a private military organization during the Cold War and post-Cold War era.

Another theme of the game is revenge, and the toll it takes on the person seeking it.

"Whispers in the air tell the tales/of a life that’s gone/Desolation, devastation/What a mess we made, when it all went wrong — “Nuclear,” Mike Oldfield"

During the upcoming title’s opening chapter, this year’s “Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes,” we see that niche literally under attack. A shadowy military outfit launches a full-scale assault on the group’s home base, demolishing the entire structure and killing most of its members.

“The Phantom Pain” will directly deal with the aftermath of that attack, and how far Big Boss/Snake will go to avenge the loss of his friends and family.

“Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain” is slated for release in 2015 (not 1984 as the new trailer jokingly states).
