Not everyone can hop on a plane at a moment’s notice to travel to a foreign country, so it’s a good thing that the YouTube generation is upon us. Without it we might not have video footage of Mastodon performing a full-on, face-melting set at the Rock in Rio festival so quickly.

The prog-metal outfit owned the stage Friday (May 25) in Lisbon, Portugal, pulling heavily from their latest album, ‘The Hunter.’ The show began with a blistering version of ‘Black Tongue,’ featured the hard-hitting singles ‘Curl of the Burl,’ ‘Dry Bone Valley,’ and ‘All the Heavy Lifting,’ and also worked in such deeper cuts as ‘Octopus Has No Friends,’ ‘Thickening,’ ‘Stargasm,’ ‘Blasteroid,’ ‘Spectrelight,’ and ‘Bedazzled Fingernails.’

Clocking in at just shy of 47 minutes, the group also played older favorites like ‘Crystal Skull’ and the pounding set closer ‘Blood and Thunder.’

Mastodon are preparing for a summer abroad. The group, fresh off their Rock on the Range set in the U.S., will play a number of European festivals, with their only return to North America this summer taking place north of the border. The group has back-to-back shows July 14 and 15 at the Ottawa Bluesfest and Quebec City’s Festival D’Ete Quebec.
