Marijuana Legalization Rally This Weekend

Despite the fact that the issue of legalized marijuana in Louisiana seemed to fall on the deaf ears of lawmakers this legislative session, cannabis advocates plan to rally together this weekend in an effort to keep legal weed at the top of everyone’s mind.

Legalize Louisiana will meet on Saturday at the State Capitol in Baton Rouge because supporters do not believe legislators are taking the issue seriously. "57% of the United States are now wanting marijuana reform.  And we don't find it fair that the citizens of Louisiana and other states aren't the ones that are able to vote on this issue,” said event organizer, Kerri Lee Short-Brecheen.

The goal of the rally, Short-Brecheen says, is to give citizens insight into several recent medical marijuana studies and show them how a tax and regulorty system on a retail cannabis trade would be beneficial to the state. "We really just want Louisiana to pay attention to what's going on. To give us a chance to decide what's right for us,” she said.

Although several bills addressing medical marijuana and decriminalization were discussed during the recent legislative session, none of the issues managed to receive approval. This shortcoming, according to Short-Breechman, is because the decision is in the hands of lawmakers and not the vote of the majority. "There are a lot of people in Louisiana that are smart people.  We should be allowed to decide this type of stuff,” she said.
