Man Stuff: Ten Pieces of Life Advice From Charles Bukowski

Let’s face it: life is tough. Things fall a part, they break…that’s just what happens. But, just because things occasionally suck, doesn’t mean you should be all sad and depressed and stuff. Live life to the fullest! To inspire you to be the best man you can be, here are some killer quotes and life lessons you can learn from one of the toughest son of bitches to ever to live on this planet, famous Author and Poet Charles Bukowski!

Michael Montfort/Bukowski.net

1) Don’t Settle

“I wanted the whole world or nothing.”

People will try to walk all over you and make you their bitch. Don’t let them and sure as hell don’t settle for less than you deserve.

2) Love Yourself

I never met another man I’d rather be. And even if that’s a delusion, it’s a lucky one.

“Baby,” I said, “I’m a genius but nobody knows it but me.”

Nobody is perfect. So you can’t beat yourself up over the little things. Even if you are a failure at life, be the BIGGEST/BEST failure you can be. Nobody can be a better you than you!

3) Live Life To The Fullest

“What is terrible is not death but the lives people live or don’t live up until their death.”

“Some people never go crazy, What truly horrible lives they must live.”

Life is to frigging short not to try. Want to do skydiving? DO IT! Want to bang a stripper? Go for it! Any moment could be your last, so don’t pass up an opportunity and regret it later. Go for it and enjoy every sandwich.

4) Don’t Fear Pain…It’s Your Friend

“You have to die a few times before you can really live.”

It sucks getting hurt. Whether it is because you got dumped or because you were called to the carpet by your boss, nobody likes getting hurt. But, guess what? It happens. So, don’t let it cripple you, own it. Every painful experience leads to knowledge which, if you let it, will help you enjoy the good times. Don’t fear pain, without it, you can’t experience happiness.

5) Be Yourself

It’s better to do a dull thing with style than a dangerous thing without it.

Don’t be afraid to be yourself. Always show your true colors and express your own fantastic personality. It’s better to live your life being your whole self than trying to pretend to be something you’re not, simply for the approval others. Who cares what those swine think anyways?

6) You Are Strong

Sometimes you climb out of bed in the morning and you think, I’m not going to make it, but you laugh inside…remembering all the times you’ve felt that way.

“What matters most is how well you walk through the fire”

“Things get bad for all of us, almost continually, and what we do under the constant stress reveals who/what we are.”

Life sucks! It will beat you to death if you let it. Yet, no matter how much life craps on you, somehow you always make it through these difficulties in one piece. Always remember that you’re stronger than you may think, and you have it in you to get through the toughest of days.

7) Don’t Fear Death

I carry death in my left pocket. Sometimes I take it out and talk to it: “Hello, baby, how you doing? When you coming for me? I’ll be ready.

“We are here to laugh at the odds and live our lives so well that Death will tremble to take us.”

“We’re all going to die, all of us, what a circus! That alone should make us love each other but it doesn’t. We are terrorized and flattened by trivialities, we are eaten up by nothing.”

Death is a fact of life. Eventually, it is going to happen. So, instead of fearing it, own it! Life life to the fullest and enjoy yourself. That way, when death comes a knocking, you can laugh your way all the way to the grave.

8) Have Confidence in Yourself

“The problem with the world is that the intelligent people are full of doubts.”

“If you’re losing your soul and you know it, then you’ve still got a soul left to lose”

People belittle others. It what happens. But just because your boss or girlfriend thinks you are a moron, don’t let them shake you. You are AWESOME! Be confident and stay true to yourself and everything else will fall into place.

9) Being Alone Isn’t That Big of A Deal

“There are worse things than being alone but it often takes decades to realize this and most often when you do it’s too late and there’s nothing worse than too late.”

I wasn’t a misanthrope and I wasn’t a misogynist but I liked being alone. It felt good to sit alone in a small space and smoke and drink. I had always been good company for myself.

Most people think because they are single and alone, that they are failures in life. That’s total BS. Relationships aren’t the end all, be all in life. Sometimes it is more important to do the things you want and reach your personal goals. Learn to appreciate yourself without others, and value your time alone.

10) Don’t Take Life So Seriously

“Sometimes you just have to pee in the sink.”

“Life’s as kind as you let it be.”

Sh*t happens. That’s life. But instead of focusing on what went wrong or why things didn’t go as planned, sometimes you just have to go with the flow. Life is suppose to be fun! Quit being so serious. Sometimes, you just have to go out, get drunk, and raise a little hell.
