Louisiana motorists can kiss the big brother of the road good-bye. Governor Bobby Jindal recently approved legislation that will outlaw speed cameras and other technological speed enforcement mechanisms along Louisiana highways.

The measure is in response to a private company that has been approaching local municipalities and selling them on the idea using their hand-held speed trap in place of routine traffic stops.

The speed camera documents the speed of which the motorist is traveling, and then sends them a ticket through the mail. Representative Mike Danahay, the sponsor of the bill, says a ban on this technology was absolutely necessary to protect the rights of Louisiana residents.

He says implementing this type of law enforcement is unjust because it does not give citizens the right to due process. In the end, this technology put concerns over income above public safety.

The lawmakers said he is aware of at least one town that was prepared to launch this new speed camera program. However, with Jindal signing the bill into law last week, all of their plans have come to a screeching halt.

The law goes into effect on January 1, 2015.
