[UPDATE]  A 5-year-old girl remains in critical condition after being struck by an SUV while getting off the school bus.

Shreveport police say the accident happened just after 3 p.m. Wednesday in the 4900 block of Jewella in west Shreveport.

The girl, identified as Maliyah Steadman, was hit by a 2010 Nissan Pathfinder after exiting her school bus, which was unloading students.

According to witnesses and evidence collected at the scene, Steadman was walking westbound crossing Jewella, when the driver of the SUV, identified as 21-year-old Vincent Hendricks, allegedly went around another vehicle that was stopped for the bus. It's alleged that Hendricks disregarded the stop signs that were extended from the bus.

Steadman was rushed to University Health. Hendricks was taken to a local hospital, where he submitted to routine toxicology tests. he was interviewed by investigators and later released. Criminal charges are pending following the test results.


[ORIGINAL STORY]  A 5- or 6-year-old girl was seriously injured after being hit by an SUV as she was getting off of her school bus.

KSLA reports the child was disembarking a Linwood Charter School bus in the 3700 block of Doris Street just before 3:30 p.m. when the accident happened.

Witnesses told police the driver of the SUV disregarded the stop sign on the bus. That driver is now in police custody.

No other injuries have been reported. The other children on the bus were shaken up, but otherwise O.K. Their parents came to pick them up.
