Join the Krewe of Harambee Monday, January 21 at the Petroleum Club in Shreveport for their 6th Annual MLK Hopes and Dreams Breakfast!

The Krewe of Harambee will host its 6th Annual MLK Hopes and Dreams Breakfast on Monday, January 21st at 8:00 a.m. at the Petroleum Club.

The keynote speaker for the occasion will be the Honorable Shonda D. Stone, Caddo Parish Juvenile Court Judge.  Judge Stone is no stranger to this community, she has been actively involved and brings to the bench a combination of genuine respect and compassion for people.

Judge Stone readily admits, however, that Family Preservation Court (formerly Family Drug Court) and its parent participants hold a special place in her heart.

The MLK Hopes and Dreams is a moment for us to reflect on the progress in civil equality, to unite us as we move forward, and to celebrate the spirit of Martin Luther King, Jr. The "Sally Singleton Scholarship" and the “Roy Griggs Scholarship” that are awarded annually are given to 5 students who will each receive $500.

Students must be African-American, come from a single parent home, have a minimum 2.5 GPA and are required to write a minimum 1,000-word typed essay entitled "How I made it against all odds."

Each of the three scholarship recipients will read their essay during the breakfast to share their inspirational stories of resilience and to encourage us all to endure life's struggles.

Additionally, CDM Smith sponsors $3,000 in band scholarships which are awarded through interview and audition to Arkansas Pine Bluff (the Marching musical machine of the mid south) through their Booster club.  The Krewe of Harambee has provided area students with more than $11,000 to further their educational aspirations.

Attendance for the breakfast ranges from 120 – 140 and is always sold out. The breakfast is attended annually by the Youth Justice, who assists the juvenile court through use of volunteers to save first time offenders & those with minor offences.

Immediately following the breakfast, the celebration will continue in downtown Shreveport with our Annual Mardi Gras parade where Roy Griggs of Griggs Enterprises (McDonald’s) will be the Grand Marshal.

Tickets are $15.00 and the event is open to the public.  For ticket information, please contact 318-286-5878.
