Iggy Pop Didn’t Give Permission for Justin Bieber Torture Photo

Gosh, people are so politically correct these days — it’s getting so you can’t even use a picture of Iggy Pop without permission in order to make a provocative point about torture by insulting a pop star.

ABC News Radio reports that the photo of Pop that made headlines last week, in which a visibly beaten Iggy is captioned with the phrase “The future of rock ‘n’ roll, it’s Justin Bieber,” was unauthorized — a fairly bizarre turn of events, considering the picture in question was used by Amnesty International, an otherwise reputable organization whose latest ads aim to remind sensible humans that aside from being immoral, torture is ineffective. As the campaign slogan puts it: “Torture a man and he will tell you anything.”

Having his likeness misappropriated for a good cause put Pop in an awkward spot, but Amnesty International has since apologized, issuing a statement that reads, “To generate awareness about our campaign against torture, [we] used an image of Iggy Pop without his authorization. Even though we acted in good faith, we would like to apologise to Iggy Pop for having done so. We would therefore also like to make it clear that the statement attributed to Iggy Pop that he believes Justin Bieber is the future of rock and roll does not represent Iggy Pop’s personal opinion but was part of the creative process for this campaign and was intended to be ironic.”

Whatever his private feelings about the mishap, Pop’s publicly playing it cool; he opted to alert his fans to the correction via Twitter, saying, “Most of you have seen the image that had been circulating since last week. Here is more about it,” followed by a link to the above statement.
