If You’re Cool Because You’re A Geek, Are You Really A Geek Anymore?

We here at Townsquare Media Shreveport/Bossier are in the process of putting together this year's Geek'd Con which happens in August.  I hadn't been very familiar with Geek Culture heretofore, but Greg Atoms and others are bringing me up to speed.  Greg's already booked Lou Ferrigno, the original Incredible Hulk; and Billy West, the voice of Ren and Stimpy, Bugs Bunny, and others.  This year's event is going to be HUGE.

I'm learning that geeks are into everything from science to sci-fi, and comics to serious literature. Being a geek has become so cool that the #1 comedy on TV for the past few years has been The Big Bang Theory which is centered around a bunch of geeks. So if everything "geek" is now cool, then the word now simply describes people who like sci-fi, comics, animation, etc.  Which is a far cry from what the word originally referred to: a carnival/circus freak who bit the head off of chickens.

Is there a middle ground in there somewhere?  I'm into hard sci-fi like that of the masters Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke.  I love New York Times crossword puzzles.  I'm also an avid golfer, fan of the Dallas Cowboys, and I love to go hiking with my daughters. Could I be a pseudo-geek, or quasi-geek?
