Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong Appears in Deleted ‘This Is 40’ Movie Scene

Spencer Kaufman, Loudwire

Although the spot was cut from the final version of the film during the editing process, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong played a cameo role as himself in the latest Judd Apatow film, ‘This is 40.’ While the clip doesn’t appear on the big screen, fans can now check out the lost footage online, seen below.

In the clip, Armstrong, who turned 40 himself earlier this year, sits down with actor Paul Rudd, who plays a music industry heavyweight. The Green Day singer pitches a new musical idea of Norwegian death metal meets Belle and Sebastian, explaining, “It’s the sort of music you can cry to – but also burn a church down at the same time.”

Delivering a straight-faced yet humoros performance, Armstrong goes on to explain the sound he’s going for, saying, “I kind of want it to sound like two different radio stations going off at the same time in a white supremacist’s car.”

When Rudd asks Armstrong if the new material he’s working on is for Green Day or a solo project Armstrong shares, “I don’t want my name to be anywhere near this thing,” and that “It’s impossible to play live. And too dangerous.” Armstrong also admits to Rudd, “I actually sell too many records, so I am trying to change that by doing a side project.”

The cameo gives a good representation of Armstrong’s sense of humor, not taking himself too seriously throughout the funny short.

With the release of their new trilogy of discs, ‘‘¡Uno!‘ ‘¡Dos!’ and ‘¡Tré!,’ Green Day decided to postpone their tour dates scheduled for late 2012 and the beginning of 2013 to allow Armstrong to continue his rehab from substance abuse. Green Day recently revealed tour dates in Europe in May through July, showing positive signs that Armstrong on the road to recovery.
