A Bossier City man who fled the scene of a crash in Broussard was killed later today  in a fiery crash in New Iberia.

LSP Troop I spokesman Master Trooper Brooks David reported 24-year-old Rakeem Blakes died in the crash that occurred around 10 a.m. on the U.S. 90 service road near Jefferson Island Road (La. 675).

Blakes failed to negotiate a curve on the service road and crossed the center line colliding with a large Kenworth truck driven by 69-year-old Billy Romero of New Iberia.

Blakes suffered fatal injuries after his Ford Explorer caught fire immediately after the collision.

While investigating the fatal crash, Troopers received information that Blakes had just been involved in a hit and run crash along U.S. 90 near the Broussard area.

Romero was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.  Impairment is unknown at this time; however, a toxicology sample was taken from Blakes and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Romero voluntarily submitted to a chemical breath test and his results indicated he was not impaired.

Troopers are continuing their investigation into the cause of the fatal crash, along with following up on information obtained about the hit and run crash.
