FFDP's Ivan Moody on Onstage Meltdown: 'We F--ked Up'

In early May, Five Finger Death Punch had a very public onstage meltdown. During their set at the Beale Street Festival in Memphis, Tenn., on May 1, frontman Ivan Moody and drummer Jeremy Spencer got into a shouting match onstage and ultimately the whole band walked out, cutting their set time short. The band’s fight was big enough that some fans in attendance thought they had just witnessed the band breakup. That was not true. In a new interview with Metal Hammer, Moody and Spencer are both talking more about the event and the band's future together.

Moody described the fight, “Jeremy [Spencer, FFDP drummer] and I were talking backstage and we were both being human. It just sucked that I had my microphone in my hand.” He continued, “The saying is that you should wash your clothes at home. Unfortunately, there were 20,000 people watching while he and I had an argument. I really f--ked up and I was so embarrassed. The fans didn't have to see that." The vocalist finished by saying, "I'll be honest, it hurt. I love the guy. He's one of my best friends, and, yeah, we f--ked up. It's humiliating."

Spencer also spoke with Metal Hammer, telling his side of the story. "Our wireless packs were having all kinds of interference and we started getting a little frustrated with that," he stated. "Then Ivan [Moody, FFDP singer] lost his cool completely and just started taking it out on everyone, including me. He and I got into a little scrap and it just wasn't cool. We got through it, but it was pretty ugly and it was unprofessional."

The drummer went on to say that the fight ultimately will not affect the future of the band. "We've been together 10 years now, so it's like a marriage — some days are better than others, but we love and respect each other,” he continued. "It was one night that wasn't great, and hopefully we can make up for it. But life goes on, man, and we're still a band."

In a previous interview, guitarist Jason Hook mentioned that alcohol may have played a part in the argument, saying Moody got "s--tfaced drunk" and "started to lose his temper onstage" taking things out on the rest of the band. Fans in attendance the night of the fight also reported that Spencer's memoir, Death Punch'd, may have also caused some of the tension. They reported seeing Moody hold the book up while facing Spencer and yelling at him.

Onstage feud or not, Five Finger Death Punch are definitely moving forward. They recently announced the track listing for their upcoming album Got Your Six. The disc will hit shelves on Aug. 28 and contain 11 songs, while a deluxe edition will include three extra songs. Got Your Six is available for pre-order at Amazon and iTunes.
