Pantera are one of the very few bands whose power and influence has remained legendary for decades. As Pantera consistently remain one of the most discussed bands in metal history, the subject of a partial reunion comes up fairly regularly. However, the question remains — who would fill the spot of the late, great “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott?

Although stating that Pantera should leave the 14 years they had together untouched by a partial reunion, drummer Vinnie Paul recently stated that if the band were to come together once again, Zakk Wylde would be the only man who can fill the spot of “Dimebag” Darrell. “I mean, [Zakk] and my brother were so tight,” began Paul. “If [a Pantera reunion] ever were to happen, [Zakk] would be the guy [to step in for Dimebag].”

Vinnie Paul isn’t the only Pantera member who spoke about the possibility of Zakk Wylde manning guitar duties. Frontman Phil Anselmo, who recently spoke to us about his love for Dimebag, responded to Vinnie Paul’s comments during a recent interview.

“That is an interesting question, if anything like that would ever possibly happen,” says Anselmo. “Vince and I would have to sit in the same room, hash out whatever differences that we have, and as far as Zakk Wylde goes, I am not too sold on that ’cause we have to hash some crap out too. That day has not come yet, and until that day comes, I can comment further on that, but till then it is just talk. It would be rough not to see Dimebag on stage to my left, I would feel naked.”

See Phil with DOWN at the Municipal Auditorium on May 27th. Tickets are available at the Rustic Cowboy, the Lotus, Disc Daddy, or at any TicketMaster location, including www.ticketmaster.com.

Black Sabbath have released a brief statement in response to Bill Ward’s lengthy statement from earlier in the week. In his lengthy screed, the band’s original drummer declaring that his “final effort” to reach an agreement that would enable him to join the band’s upcoming reunion shows had failed.

Obviously and wisely deciding that they wouldn’t be able to match Ward word-for-word, the other three members of Black Sabbath — Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne and Geezer Butler — have gone the minimalist route, reminding everyone that there are two sides to every story, reporting that they have indeed found a replacement drummer (our money’s on Ozzy’s current drummer, Tommy Clufetos) and that they’ll see their fans out on tour. You can read their full statement below:

We have decided not to make any detailed comment on Bill’s latest statement. There are two sides to every story. We have been working hard at rehearsals making excellent progress after Tony’s treatments and we have engaged a substitute drummer for the forthcoming shows. See you at Download.

In 2002, the Foo Fighters were at a crossroads…

When they went into the studio to work on material that eventually became the “One By One’ album, they had just come off a two-year tour, various members were battling inner demons (read: Taylor Hawkins drug problems), and the sessions were going nowhere fast. The band were unhappy with the songs they had written, and their performances on the material. After long, heated discussions, they decided to scrap the songs and take some time off. The band was on the brink of a breakup.

Then came Coachella.

After an incendiary performance at the festival, a recharged Foo Fighters went back to the studio to take another crack at recording a new album. They eventually finished the album that would win them a pair of Grammys — Best Hard Rock Performance and Best Rock Album. But strangely enough, that album remains the band’s least favorite, and they seldom play any of the material live.

But what happened to the original recordings for ‘One By One’? The “Million Dollar Demos”, as they later became known? Well, obviously, they still exist, as a couple of the original demos have leaked onto the interwebs. Decidedly different from the versions that made it to the finished product, the songs, are as good…maybe better than the album versions. Check them out here, and let me know if you agree…

Following the news last week of several new shows added, things seem to have gone south for Van Halen since then. Without much explanation, the legendary rock band just announced that they’ll be postponing all remaining tour dates after their June 26 show in New Orleans, La. With over 30 dates being postponed, the dates impacted start on July 7 in Uncasville, Conn. and span through a Sept. 25 gig in Milwaukee.

According to Pollstar, the band has already removed all of the dates from their website. However as of right now, the shows are only being postponed, hinting that they will be rescheduled at a later date.

Markets affected by the postponements include: Philadelphia, Baltimore, Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Memphis, Spokane, Reno, Fresno and Wichita, just to name a few.

No particular reason has been given for the postponements, yet Rolling Stone reports that sources say the bandmembers “hate each other” and that they are “arguing like mad.”

Van Halen still have active tour dates running through May and June that have not been impacted by this turn of events, check out all the dates below including the postponed ones.

Van Halen are currently touring in support of ‘A Different Kind of Truth,’ their first album with singer David Lee Roth since ’1984.’

I am a big fan of strippers. Why? Because they are the only women I can get to touch my penis on a regular basis. But, that’s not really the point of this post. My point is that I go to the strip club a lot and I hear a lot (A LOT!) of sh*tty rap music. I mean there are a few good rap songs that are good for the strip club, but most of them are pure crap. I remember a time when you’d walk into a strip club and hear Pantera or Manson or something playing. Well, those days may be slipping away from us…but I’m not going to let them go without a fight! Here are some of my favorite stripper tunes. Let me know what some of yours are…Now, I need to go hit the ATM and Vu (I’d hit the Clubhouse, but that’s a long drive just to look at some boobies). Excuse me.

Hockey. Now there’s a sport! It’s fast; you get to carry (and swing) a big stick; you get to fire a rock solid chunk of rubber at people’s faces, and a bloody fight breaks out about every 30 seconds (thus, the origin of the term “red ice”). Hockey trumps feux sports like baseball and golf every time.

I really didn’t think hockey could get any better. I was wrong.

Chicks in bikinis, like bacon, make everything better. Put chicks in bikinis in charge, and the Inquisition would still be popular. Probably on pay-per-view. So, it was only a matter of time before a marketing genius came up with the idea of putting chicks in bikinis on skates and handing them a stick. And then giving them their own realityshow. Holy Geezus, we’ve found a way to print money!!!

The Bikini Hockey League is the brainchild of Cary Eskridge of Tulsa, and here in a recent press release, is how it breaks down:

The idea of a bikini hockey league came to Tulsan Cary Eskridge back in 2004 when the National Hockey League lockout occurred. The lack of major league hockey left the media scrambling to fill the void of hockey news and fans looking for other forms of entertainment. Not a man to sit still, Eskridge started looking for ways to fill the void and that is when the idea of bikini hockey came to Eskridge’s mind.

But there was not enough time to react and make the dream a reality at that time. So the idea stayed on the back burner waiting for the right time. Well, that time has finally come.

Eskridge has an extensive hockey background and feels now is the time to finally breathe life into his long-time dream. Eskridge has a background in video production and has also owned inline hockey leagues on and off for the past 20 years and believes the Bikini Hockey League could bring back the popularity and awareness of inline hockey to the mainstream and introduce new fans to a great sport.

Notice, that nowhere in the backstory, do you hear about backsides. But you know that backsides are one of the draws here…Expansion to a full-blown league with franchises in other cities is in the talking stages. For now, Eskridge is scouting for a mansion to house the players in during tryouts, a la The Bachelor – which is where the reality show part comes in. Know someone with the necessary ass-sets? Try-outs (i.e., ‘Casting’) are going on now, they can sign up on the league’s official website. I have a few prospective candidates here:

As if recording a cranked-up collection of American folk standards with Crazy Horse wasn’t enough activity for one year, Neil Young is also getting ready to strap on his guitar, turn the amps up, and hit the road for a steadily expanding series of dates — including appearances at Red Rocks, the Voodoo Fest, and Outside Lands.

The fun starts in August, when Neil — presumably with Crazy Horse in tow — will touch down in Colorado for a pair of dates at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre. The concerts, scheduled for August 5 and 6, will feature opening sets from the Alabama Shakes; tickets go on sale this Friday (May 18).

A few days later, Neil and Crazy Horse will head to San Francisco, where they’ll serve as co-headliners on an Outside Lands bill that’s stuffed with superstars, including Stevie Wonder, Metallica, Jack White and the Foo Fighters. This year’s event marks the festival’s fifth birthday, and is scheduled to take place in Golden Gate Park over the weekend of August 10-12; tickets are already on sale at the Outside Lands website.

Finally, in October, Young will be part of this year’s Voodoo Fest in New Orleans, where he’s joining Green Day on the headlining portion of what promises to be a pretty epic lineup. Tickets for the event, which is scheduled for October 26-28, can be purchased at the festival website.

While you’re deciding when and where you’ll see Neil perform with Crazy Horse this year, you can also brace yourself for the impending release of their new album ‘Americana,’ due June 5. Neil released a video for the album track ‘Jesus Chariot’ a few days ago, which you can watch here.

Personal lubricants usually come in fruity flavors, but this particular lube has the unmistakable taste of whiskey. That’s right. Someone invented whiskey flavored lube — perfect for that girl you picked up at your weekly AA meetings.

The brain child of the people behind Epic Meal Time, this personal lubricant for whiskey and penis lovers everywhere. Who knew there was a crossover? Whiskey Dick, as it is delightfully named, boasts to be “the gold standard of booze-flavored personal lubricants.” Who took home the silver and bronze medals? Nevermind.

We think this is a pretty good idea, because nothing says “let’s get it on” like the smell of booze smeared all over your private parts. Watch out though, her gag reflex might increase just a tad.

It’s been a crazy couple of months here at 99X. Between attacking bands and having them attack us, we’ve had some pretty killer shows… X-Fest 2012 featuring Staind and Halestorm, Crowbar, Prong, Shadows Fall, Shinedown, Art of Dying ect. have all come to town in the past month or so and kicked our asses! But Memorial Day weekend is going to be INSANE with some of the craziest concerts of the year. Not only do we have the Charm City Devils playing the Warehouse for a 99X Low Dough Show on the 25th, but DOWN will be hitting the Municipal on Sunday May 27th.

Now, for those of you who have been living underneath a rock or drunk in a dumpster for the past 15 years, DOWN is a band made up of the baddest Motherf**kers in Rock and Metal. The band’s line up features Phil Anselmo from Pantera on the mic, Jimmy Bower on the skins, Kirk Windstein and Pepper Keenan on guitar, and Pat Bruders on Bass. Needless to say, this show will kick the sh*t out of you. If you have a vagina, and can’t handle in-your-face, kick ass metal, you probably shouldn’t get tickets for this show. For the rest of you, you can buy tickets here, at the Lotus in Bossier, Disc Daddy, the Rustic Cowboy, and all Ticketmaster Outlets. Plus, we are 99X, so we will be hooking your broke ass up with tickets sometime very, very soon. Just make sure you get tickets or Phil WILL come to your house and kick your ass!

But to help you get f**king pumped for an awesome Memorial Day weekend, here are some of my favorite DOWN tunes (Forgive the Sound quality on some of these…but DOWN is just too bad ass to be contained by a YouTube Video):

Yesterday, my post about the state of rock and roll seemed to get a lot of people excited. It’s nice to see that people are as passionate about what’s going on (and what’s wrong) with rock as I am. So much so, that Stu and Brad Kirspel said (hopefully jokingly) that I should run for President. And at first glance, it seems insane. Me running the most powerful country in the world? Come on…

But, after thinking about it a while, I think I could do this country some good. Shake things up and get us back on top. I really could be the enema America needs.

I think if elected, my first order of business would be to over throw our government. Now, I know that sounds insane, but stick with me. I would become ruler/dictator of the USA. My first order of business to show what the new America is going be like, is to change the currency. The dead presidents are a symbol of the old American way, so I’m put a breath of fresh air into the country by changing out those faces. On the One Dollar bill- George Carlin, The Five-Bill Hicks, Ten-Sam Kinison, Twenty-MJK, and on the Hundred-Dave Grohl. I think those people embody the spirit of America, the free thinking, creative side that made us the Greatest Country in the World! Also, the National Anthem will be permanently to Jimi Hendrix’s version of the Star Spangled Banner.

My next order of business to help reinvigorate and revitalize our economy, as well as cut back on crime, would be to change the laws and punishment. Everything would be legalized. But there is a caveat, if your actions hurt or impair someone else’s life, you will be arrested and punished accordingly.

If convicted of your offenses in a court of law, you will not be jailed…you will be beaten. For instance, let’s say you got drunk and killed somebody. Instead of spending 10 or 20 years, we are going beat your mercilessly on Pay Per View (so we can put money back into the country without taxing the hell out of everyone). And it won’t just be a normal beating. Since this particular offense took place behind the wheel of a car, we will be you with steering wheels, car doors, drivers ed books, etc (If you shoot someone, you will be beaten with a gun book, pistol whipped, etc. I think you get the idea). You may live, you may die, but I guaran-damn-tee your ass won’t be doing anymore dumb stuff.

Stu would be my Chief Defense officer/Department of Defense, Gonzo would be legal council, and Rockin’ Rick would be our Weather adviser. The people will have a say in the government and how we proceed in certain national issues. But again, anyone dicks off and/or does something dumb, they will be beaten.

This my vision for our new America. Doesn’t it sound like a great place to live? Remember, this erection…I mean election, vote Puff for President if you want real change…unless you want to be beaten.

Hey guys and gals,

This weekend I went to the Warehouse for the Prom Party (which was awesome by the way), and the only thing people wanted to talk to me about was this whole Saving Abel situation. I’ve heard a wide range of opinions on the subject…everything from me being an asshole to people trashing the band for being a bunch of whiny bitches. And honestly, both points are probably true. So, I just wanted to take this time to clear a few things up because I’m tired of talking about it.

I fell in love with rock and roll at very young age. My uncle, who was a roadie for Alice Cooper, introduced me to Black Sabbath and Motley Crue when I was 6, and from there on out I was hooked. I grew up listening to bands that played from the bottoms of their heart and souls-Nine Inch Nails, Manson, Tool, Metallica, Motley Crue, Motorhead, etc.- and they didn’t get played on the radio because they sold their souls and made deals to get played. No, they got played because they unapologetically kicked ass and made great tunes. I’m not really sure what or when things went wrong, but today things are seriously effed up. I guess that’s part of the reason I went into a blind rage and started on the warpath against Saving Abel.

Now, I’m not naive or stupid, so I know what happened wasn’t entirely their fault. Actually, I was the one that effed up by playing their song before it was supposed to be played. Hell, there isn’t exactly a handbook to this sh*t. We get a song, we listen to it, and if it’s decent, we put it on the air. Sometimes we get things in early and we play it before we are suppose to, but for the most part the bands and labels are cool with it, so it all works out. Saving Abel and there people weren’t fine with the song being played early which is more than ok. I’ll take my beating and move on. The part that pissed me off to no end was the whole Satellite radio aspect of it. Instead of saving for radio, something that most fans actually listen to, they opted to put it on satellite. Which, in my world as a music fan, is not cool. It was probably some record weasel or suit on their management that made the deal with Satellite radio to premier their new song ‘Bringing Down the Giant.’ I get it. But it’s sort of like finding out your girlfriend is banging the bully that used to beat you up and steal your lunch money. And that is from being a fan of music, not as a radio guy. Something like 95% of the population didn’t hear the new Saving Abel song because most of us don’t have satellite radio or we have it and don’t listen to it. In fact, more people in this world of ours have rectal cancer than listen to satellite radio. But, some genius thought this would help the band sell records, so they sold their soul to the enemy to make a few quick bucks and maybe sell a few singles when it gets released on iTunes tomorrow.

But at the end of the day, how did Saving Abel become Saving Abel? How did Motley Crue become Motley Crue? How did anybody become anybody? It was through hard work, making good tunes, and through getting played where people can hear them…funny how that works.

For some reason, bands and their management teams are always looking for the “next best thing”. Whether it be music television (when was the last you saw a music video on MTV?) or satellite radio or the internet or whatever, and they tend to forget that people that got them where they are, the fans and the radio. But guess what, MTV failed and so will Satellite radio because all they do is give you the music. There isn’t a guy there giving you a personal anecdotes about the band or telling you when they are coming to town. There is no connection. There is no soul. And that is what separates the good from the bad.

Again, Saving Abel isn’t the problem. They are only a small, insignificant part of the overall problem. But, they sign these record deals, and hire these management teams that drive a wedge between them and their fans instead of bringing them together. That is what pissed me off. It had nothing to do with getting a slap on the wrist for playing their song early. That I get. I get the business aspect of music. But, these bands and suits are forgetting about how they got successful in the first place, and that is by taking care of their fans.

Hell, here recently, we had a band with show a complete and utter lack of respect to us, the fans. Staind and Halestorm were awesome as always. They took the time to hang out and spend some quality time with each and every person we took backstage. But things took a turn for the worse when we ran into Godsmack. Not only did they treat us as an annoyance, but they refused to sign a sick kid’s guitar (who is a Godsmack super fan) and had the balls to call us a “bunch of inbred, redneck hicks.” That’s not how you treat the people that pay your bills.

Maybe all of this is just in my head. Maybe it’s because I have respect for the people I work with and work for. And, I’m not talking about the Corporate guys in Monkey Suits. I’m talking about you guys and the people I work with here at the station. We do whatever it takes to make you guys happy. Stu, Gonzo, Kayla Keys, Rockin Rick, and I bust our asses and do whatever we can within our power to provide the things we think and know you guys deserve. Whether it be playing the new Puscifer or bringing the bands you guys want to see to town, or whatever, we do the best we can. I guess that’s why I got so f**king pissed last week. It’s not about anything else that happened. It’s about taking care of you guys and being the best station we can be.

I kind of feel bad about beating up on Saving Abel a tiny bit, but at the end of the day, I’m okay with everything that happened. Hell it was fun. I enjoy stirring up trouble, it’s part of my job. But there is a method to my madness. Saving Abel just happened to be the wrong band, at the wrong time, doing the wrong thing.

So, if protecting the people and the music I love makes me an asshole…so be it. I’ve been punched in the teeth by love on more than one occasion, I just think it’s high time we start fighting back. I believe it’s time to let all these schumcks, whether they be in monkey suits or not, that enough is enough. It’s time to put rock and roll back into the hands of the people that care about it, the fans and the bands.

With that being said, hopefully, we’ll see all of you guys out and about supporting some bands that embody the spirit of rock and roll. Whether it be the Charm City Devils on May 25th at the Warehouse, DOWN on May 27th at the Municipal, or 66% of the show on June 12th featuring Aranda, Redlight King, and that other *Cough*band at the Warehouse.

We all love rock and roll, it’s time to show everbody how much by holding the artist to the highest standards. I’ve had enough of that Nickelback crap they’ve been pawning off as rock, I’ve had enough of bands thinking they are better than us, the fan, and I have certainly had enough of corporate money hungry douchebags taking the fun out of rock and rock radio. Time to give em hell and show them who’s boss (and in case you haven’t been paying attention, that would be us)!

With Love from your friendly neighborhood asshole,

Puff

P.S.- If we had more people who followed this simple philosophy, the rock universe would be a better place for all of us.

For a band that began their career by putting out 12 albums in the first 15 years of their career, AC/DC have become almost invisible as a studio entity in the ensuing 22 years. Despite still having massive global appeal, they’ve only released three albums since 1990′s ‘The Razor’s Edge,’ and nothing since 2008′s ‘Black Ice.’

Hopes were raised back in January when singer Brian Johnson said that he hoped the boys would get back together at some point this year. However, a recent interview with guitarist Malcolm Young has put the kibosh on dreams of a new AC/DC album appearing soon.

“You know what Brian’s like,” Young told Classic Rock. “He just says things and then walks away. It’ll be a little while – a year or two anyway.

“I’ve been doing some jamming on some song ideas but I do that all the time, as do the rest of the band,” Young continued. “We are still working. But we had a long rest between ‘Stiff Upper Lip’ and ‘Black Ice,’ so I think we need a couple of years to recuperate and work on it a bit more.”

So that’s the news straight from Malcolm Young’s mouth. Nothing new from AC/DC until 2013 at the earliest. Until then, we’ll just keep playing our copy of ‘Back in Black,’ whose title song recently finished at No. 4 on our list of the Top 100 Classic Rock Songs.

With Shadows Fall gearing up for the release of their seventh album ‘Fire From the Sky’ this Tuesday (May 15), the Massachusetts metal mavens have shared a new song from the platter called ‘Lost Within.’ Trust us, it’ll rev your metal engines.

It’s track eight on the album and it’s straight up, thrashtastic metal, full of the guitar solos we’ve come to expect from the band. It’s also vintage Shads, with vocalist Brian Fair showing off his three-tiered vocal prowess over some guitar pyrotechnics offered up by the dual attack of Jon Donais and Matt Bachand.

If you like what you hear in this song, well, be sure and head to your local retailer or favorite digital destination to pick up music and nab the album.

Guitarist extraordinaire Donais spoke to Premier Guitar specifically about this song and its solo, saying, “I always like to balance things out. I feel the solo should be a part of the song. You want to hear that solo live because it’s a part of the song just like somebody singing a chorus. I like to do a couple of measures of going crazy, then slow down and play melodically to let somebody who doesn’t play the guitar have a chance to get into the solo. Plus, people who do play the guitar will like it, too, because there’s some fancy stuff in there.”

That’s fancy-speak for it’s guitar-driven and it rocks!
