Explore The History Of The Red River At Downtown Visitor Center

If you're from Shreveport-Bossier, The Red River is just a part of life. Sometimes when something like that is always here, you take its beauty and history for granted...that is until it floods. But The Red has a long and storied history stretching its nearly 1400 miles, and there's a place in downtown Shreveport that is all about the Red River.

On Clyde Fant Parkway, just North of Sciport, sits the J. Bennett Johnston Waterway Regional Visitor Center. Admission is free to this educational center, and according to its website, the center covers the history of The Red and tells some amazing stories.

The J. Bennett Johnston Waterway Regional Visitor Center provides the opportunity for people of all ages to learn about the Red River, past and present. The center tells the story of how the Corps of Engineers worked to tame the mighty Red for navigation and recreation. The J. Bennett Johnston Waterway Regional Visitor Center offers 8,300 square feet housing a reception area, theater and exhibition hall with audiovisual, static and interactive exhibits. The multi-purpose theater provides a continuous film, highlighting the Red River. As a Regional Visitor Center, all the states (New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana) which the Red River passes through are represented.

The daily operation hours of the center are: Wednesday - Saturday 10:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m., Closed Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
