City orders mandatory evacuation for Normandy Village apartments On Fairfield.

The evacuation comes after part of the drainage ditch caved in. Heavy rains in the area are to blame for the collapse and fear the structure is not safe. Part of the retaining wall tin the Ockley drainage ditch has been eroding because of the flooding.

The American Red Cross has found housing for those evacuated.

Here's a statement from the Mayors office:

The City of Shreveport ordered a mandatory evacuation Thursday evening for some residents of Normandy Village.

Flooding near the complex threatened nine units during the rain storm. City officials partnered with the Red Cross to securehotel stays for nine families, totaling 12 people.

City crews spent Thursday monitoring the situation and decided to evacuate residents as rains continued.

“Although there was no immediate danger, we felt that this evacuation was a precautionary measure should more rain come in tonight as predicted,” said Mayor Ollie Tyler
