Dave Grohl Taking Sound City Players on Global Tour?
Dave Grohl has only lined up a few shows with his all-star side band the Sound City Players, but he has big plans for the project: he wants to take it on tour around the globe. “We plan to do shows all over the world,” the Foo Fighters frontman tells Billboard of the group, which includes the likes of John Fogerty, Rick Springfield, Fleetwood Mac‘s Stevie Nicks and Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick. Grohl assembled the band to help promote his new ‘Sound City’ movie.
He also wants to beef up the live experience of seeing the Sound City Players. ”When I came up with the idea of taking all these performers to the live stage a few months ago, my idea [was] to have video presentations between each performance,” says Grohl. “We’ll have that at the next shows.”
Grohl explains that his ‘Sound City’ film – which documents the former Van Nuys, Calif., recording studio where Nirvana‘s ‘Nevermind’ and other legendary albums were recorded – started as a modest endeavor but quickly grew in scope as other musicians expressed interest in taking part.
“I thought I’d pay tribute (to Sound City studios) by making a short film and putting it on YouTube,” he says. “It was right around the 20th anniversary of ’Nevermind’ so I thought this will be a nice sidebar that I’m reunited with the board that made that album. Then I got the shortlist of everyone who made an album there and it’s not a short list. I called out to as many people as I could, thinking maybe some of them would want to talk and all of them wanted to talk.”
