Students in Caddo Parish might be seeing a new sex education curriculum soon.

School board members are looking at the "Choosing the Best" to replace the "Sex Respect" program. Sex Respect was put in place in the mid 80's after months of contentious debate. Many parents were not happy about the fact that the curriculum was abstinence-based. But after several heated meetings, the program was adopted.

Now a new parent review committee will be appointed to take a close look at the new curriculum. Public meetings will also be held.

Dr. Lamar Goree tells KEEL News a parent review committee will be appointed to take a close look at the new curriculum.

"If you look at the long term picture, over ten years you have to ask will these decisions improve our world and our education system. This program does have documented research to show that it has done that."
Public meetings will also be held after the School Board also reviews the new curriculum.
Parents will be able to opt a child out of the program. Teachers are required to send opt-out letters home before starting the lessons. That's the same process the school system follows now.
The materials are available for public inspection at the School Board Office, 1961 Midway Street.
