Love 'em or hate 'em the Byrd Yellow Jackets were able to be the only team since 1989 to BEAT District 5A top ranked West Monroe in a season opening game last night at Lee Hedges Stadium.

The Jackets haven't beaten the Rebels since 2002, but that all changed Thursday night. The win can really be attributed to Byrd's defense who played tough all night. Steven Soloman, Chad Cotton and Will Anglin are just some of the guys leading that effort.

The final score: Byrd 30, West Monroe 23. Quarterback Richard Carthon played one of his best games ever to lead his team to the big win. Byrd's next matchup is against Marshall next Saturday at Independence Stadium for the Battle on the Border that you'll be able to hear right here on THE Rock Station 99X. Kickoff is set for 3pm.
