The Bossier Sheriff's Office is participating in a statewide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign this week.

The operation runs from June 30-July 5 and is aimed at identifying and removing impaired drivers from the roadways during the busy Independence Day weekend.

"Typically, there are more impaired drivers on the roads during the weekends and nights, but that number goes even higher during this time of year and other festive occasions," said Sgt. Jeff Pleasants with the BSO's Traffic Unit in a news release.

Deputies will be all over the parish, day and night, with the mission of keeping residents safe.

"Sheriff Whittington's primary goal is compliance with the law," Pleasants said. "Driving while impaired affects more than just the person behind the wheel. We want to educate residents before they cause injury or death to themselves or others."

According to stats released by the BSO, deputies made 194 DWI arrests in 2015. From January to May of this year, that number is already at 122. That doesn't include any arrests made by Bossier City or Louisiana State Police.

"We want residents to enjoy the holidays and extended weekends, but be responsible when doing so," said Sheriff Whittington. "We want to keep everyone safe on the roadways. All it takes is one irresponsible choice to ruin your life or another's live."

The campaign is part of a grant of more than $14,000 awarded to the sheriff's office from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission for DWI enforcement.
