Today is the day for the solar eclipse. Several local groups are hosting eclipse parties.

Several branches of Shreve Memorial Library will have watch parties. You'll be able to get a free pair of eclipse viewing glasses at these branches (while supplies last):

David Raines Branch, West Shreveport on Pines Road, Hosston, North Shreveport and the Broadmoor Branch.

At Broadmoor, they are hosting an All-American Eclipse Viewing Party. You can meet on the front lawn of the library at 1 p.m. to get your glasses (while they last) and view the eclipse. The best time to view it in our area is 1:17 p.m.

Hosston Library

This is the first American total solar eclipse in 38 years.

Twisted Root Burger in Bossier City is also holding a party. During the eclipse (11:46am-2:46pm) the burger joint will give out complimentary glasses (while supplies last) so you can safely look at the sun and take home as a remembrance of the day.

The Remington Hotel in Downtown Shreveport is also hosting a party. It will be held on the rooftop of the hotel. This event will also include live music, food and drinks.

Sci-port is hosting a week of solar eclipse programming including a rotation station and celestial conga. Get a full list of the week's events right here.

NASA will be live streaming video of the solar eclipse on Monday afternoon.

Here are some safety tips you need to know about:

  1. Never look at the Sun directly without protective eye gear. Even sunglasses cannot protect your eyes from the damage the Sun's rays can do to them.
  2. Always keep your back towards the Sun while looking at a pinhole projection.
  3. Do not look at the Sun through the pinhole.
