On this day in 1977, Janet Guthrie became the first woman to race in the Indy 500. Unfortunately, she was forced to drop out of the race after only 27 laps, finishing in the 29th slot out of 33 entries.
Janet and Shirley Muldowney became inspirations for a whole generation of females, who not only drive in major motorsports, but look damn good while doing it. With your approval (or not)…the Babes of Racing:
