Don Rickles, Iconic Comedian and Actor, Dead at 90
Don Rickles’ talents were seemingly limitless: An outrageous insult comic, a gifted dramatic actor, a welcome sight on stages and screens (big and small), and a constant presence whose career endured for decades, often surpassing his contemporaries. And now he’s gone on to join them, as the legendary Rickles passed away today, April 6, at the age of 90.
That New ‘Matrix’ Movie Isn’t a Reboot or a Remake
When news broke earlier this week that Warner Bros. is developing a reboot of The Matrix, the only appropriate response was one that Keanu Reeves would approve of: Whoa. And that’s not necessarily a good “whoa,” especially since the Wachowskis reportedly aren’t involved. But Matrix fans can relax a bit because, according to the writer of the new project, this isn’t a reboot or a remake after all.
‘Alien: Covenant’ SXSW Footage: Three Scenes, Lots of Screams
“My mantra has always been to scare the living s— out of you.” Those were Ridley Scott’s final words before he unleashed three scenes from Alien: Covenant to a packed theater at SXSW last night. Scott was joined by stars Katherine Waterston, Michael Fassbender and Danny McBride at a special screening of his original Alien, preceded by a sneak peek at footage from Covenant. You’re warned of potential spoilers from here on out, but it’s doubtful that Scott, who seems very confident about his “quite clever” prequel, would allow us to see footage that gave away too much.
Disney Attempts Another New ‘Tron’ Movie, This Time With Jared Leto
After a series of delays and false starts (or near-misses, however you want to define it), Disney officially nixed Tron 3…but they didn’t take the Tron franchise off the table entirely. Just this week, Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski divulged some details from the third Tron film (titled Ascension) and revealed that the sequel wasn’t totally dead, but in “cryogenic freeze.” According to a new report, Disney is gearing up to return to the world of Tron, with Jared Leto eyeing a lead role in the new project — but it’s not exactly a sequel.
Dwayne Johnson Teams With Stephen Merchant For ‘Fighting With My Family’ Wrestling Film
Today in Uh, Okay news, the ridiculously prolific Dwayne Johnson is teaming up with the WWE and Film4 to produce a wrestling dramedy based on the Channel 4 British documentary The Wrestlers: Fighting With My Family. The film, which centers on the life of WWE wrestler Paige and her family, will be written and directed by the brilliant Stephen Merchant — of all people.
Joe Manganiello Shares Blurry New Peek at Batman Villain Deathstroke (Updated)
To celebrate the birthday of DC’s Geoff Johns, Joe Manganiello has shared a new photo of Deathstroke, and it’s…a little blurry. In case you’d forgotten, the actor is playing the Batman villain in Ben Affleck’s solo film, simply titled The Batman — but we might get a peek at the baddie in action a little sooner than that, as Deathstroke is rumored to be making a brief appearance in Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
New ‘Baywatch’ Trailer Is NSFW and Totally Ridiculous
“Everything that you guys are talking about sounds like a really entertaining but far-fetched TV show” — so says Zac Efron in the new international trailer for Baywatch, which combines the self-awareness of 21 Jump Street (or seems to be trying to do that) with the ridiculous action of your average Dwayne Johnson movie. The latest trailer for the comedic retread of the classic ’90s TV series drops the green-band pleasantries for a profanity-laden, NSFW sneak peek at the upcoming film, and though we’re not 100 percent sold on it just yet, Baywatch looks pretty darn watchable, at the very least.
Ryan Reynolds May Have Filmed a Deadpool Scene for ‘Logan’ [UPDATE]
Ryan Reynolds’ wish for a proper Deadpool and Wolverine crossover movie may never come true, but the actor has apparently achieved something pretty close with a small cameo in Logan. According to a new report, the actor recently filmed a scene for Hugh Jackman’s final bow as Wolverine, though it’s unclear if we’ll actually see the two characters share the screen when Logan hits theaters next spring.
‘Godzilla 2’ Gets an Official Title as ‘Pacific Rim 2’ Undergoes Name Change
Casually tucked into an official press release to announce the hiring of three new production executives at Legendary, you will find two interesting pieces of info: First is the official title for Godzilla 2, the follow-up to Gareth Edwards’ 2014 monster blockbuster, and second is the title for Pacific Rim 2 — which already had a title, but has apparently been given a much better one.
Disney’s Live-Action ‘Cruella’ Movie With Emma Stone Eyes ‘Mozart in the Jungle’ Co-Creator to Direct
Disney is taking another one of the many (many, many, many) live-action projects from their growing to-do pile and officially placing it in the queue, as the studio appears to have found a director for their long-developing Cruella project. Like Maleficent, this one offers a bit of a twist, re-imagining the classic 101 Dalmatians story through the eyes of its villain, Cruella De Vil, with Emma Stone set to play the titular role.
David Ayer to Direct Margot Robbie’s Female DC Villain Ensemble ‘Gotham City Sirens’
Despite some of its more…divisive…aspects, there was at least one part of Suicide Squad that most people could agree on: Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn was pretty great. And it seems that, for as much fun as we had watching her on screen as the Joker’s occasional partner in crime, Robbie had just as much, as not long after the film hit theaters, it was reported that the actress was spearheading a spinoff featuring Harley and a handful of female DC villains. That project is called Gotham City Sirens, and it just took one big step closer to the big screen, with David Ayer signing on to direct.
Ryan Reynolds Wants to Get Deadpool and Wolverine Back Together for Another Movie
Celebrities really are just like us — well, Ryan Reynolds is, anyway. Like you, he also wants to see Deadpool and Wolverine reunite on the big screen, this time for a much better film. It took several years, but the tenacious actor’s commitment to getting a proper Deadpool movie off the ground finally paid off (in a huge way), which has Reynolds thinking that maybe it’s time for the Merc With the Mouth and Old Man Logan to get the band back together.
