I don't know where the 'death metal' bros are on Trivium, or even the djentlemen are, but what I do know is that Trivium is directly responsible for a crop of metal fans discovering a whole new realm of music.

Trivium will go down in history as one of the best gateway metal bands.

Though the bands roots started in 2000, the 'mainstream' didn't get a taste of them until 2004, when Roadrunner Records unleashed their major label debut Ascendancy onto us. The album threw out singles like "Like Light To The Flies" and "A Gunshot To The Head Of Trepidation". I owned a copy of the album, and my absolute favorite was "Pull Harder On The Strings Of Your Martyr"

As the band continued, they stuck together for the most part, across albums like The Crusade and Shogun. But drummer Travis Smith left prior to the album In Waves, which happens to be my favorite Trivium album. Nothing against Travis Smith.

The album In Waves was a return to the sound they debuted with back in 2004. Which is probably why I like it more than the two albums in between. The best song (for me) is the title track...which also featured an epic music video:

The next album in Trivium's evolution was Vengeance Falls, and album that continues to divide Trivium fans. But don't count me into that group, I don't feel divided on it at all. I think it was the perfect Trivium album for where they were.

Why are fans divided on this album? It was different, from ANYTHING they'd done before. But to be totally honest, it is because the most hardcore of Trivium fans HATED that they turned to Disturbed front-man David Draiman to produce the album. Even though he did a fine job on the critically acclaimed album, these 'true metal' bros couldn't shake that Draiman was involved.

If you want to hear the difference in sound, you don't need to look any further than the song "Strife"

But no matter where anyone landed on Vengeance Falls, what Trivium did next may go down as their crowning jewel. The album they released in October of 2015, Silence In The Snow, changed the trajectory of Trivium forever.

Everything the band has learned, experienced, perfected...all came together on this masterpiece.

I know that I already said that In Waves is my favorite Trivium album, but that's mostly based on the time I've already spent with it. Ask me again in 6-9 months, and THIS might be my favorite Trivium album ever.

The band took their soaring riffs, their exquisite lyrical content, and their confidence, and made it into a beautiful evolution.

I'm sure some 'true metal' bros hate the lack of thrash that they showed on earlier albums. There are probably early fans who have moved into djent and viking metal. But THIS is the Trivium album we need right now.

However long you've loved Trivium, or even if you just kind-of-like-them, come join us when Trivium hits The Riverside Warehouse on Friday, Feb 19th. This show will be huge, considering their place in the world of metal, metalcore, thrash metal, or whatever you want to call them...and they're playing in YOUR backyard, on a Friday, for only $17 in advance. That's insane.
